Ebook About
From Robert Dugoni, the #1 Kindle -bestselling author of MY SISTER’S GRAVE, and Environmental Protection Agency Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer comes a true story of good and evil, greed and its consequences, and an elusive quest for justice…Early in the morning on August 27, 1996, twenty year old Scott Dominguez showed up for an ordinary day at the fertilizing plant where he worked. By 11:00am, he was clinging to life, unconscious and suffocating from toxic exposure to cyanide in a tank that was supposed to contain only mud and water. EPA Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer was tasked with finding out what really happened on that horrific day in Soda Springs, Idaho, but the answers would not be easily uncovered. For more than four years Hilldorfer, his partner Bob Wojnicz, and a force of top-ranking U.S. attorneys struggled to expose the disturbing truths behind the tragedy, but would their efforts be enough to put the man responsible, Allan Elias, behind bars? Dugoni, a New York Times bestselling author known for his heart-pounding legal thrillers, and Hilldorfer, the agent who lived and breathed the Dominguez case, pen a compulsively readable work that is every bit as enthralling as fiction, yet is alarmingly true.***A Washington Post Best Book of the Year selection*** “The Cyanide Canary is a marvelously suspenseful tale...a bona fide thriller pitting joyous, decent good guys against a villain without a scintilla of redeeming social value. Who wins in this robust scenario? Read the book and find out.”The Washington Post “...As compelling as any brilliantly written murder mystery... A roller-coaster ride of a book.”New York Times bestselling author, Ann Rule“...An important book for anyone concerned about the world around them.”Former EPA Administrator, Christie Todd Whitman Kirkus STARRED Review: “...An electrically charged narrative... A top-notch nonfiction legal thriller.” Booklist STARRED Review: “An enthralling legal drama. This account engages the reader, evoking both outrage over worker safety and suspense over the outcome of the trial. The authors...tell a fully rounded, gripping story of how environmental crime is prosecuted in the real world.”

Book The Cyanide Canary: A True Story of Injustice Review :

Although the book is very technical and some people might find it complicated I found it interesting. What happened to Scott Dominguez should never have happened. It's tragic and horrible. I can't understand a law that doesn't allow him to be awarded any compensation to help with his medical bills and continuing care. That should be changed. Why should victims of environmental crimes be treated differently than victims of other crimes. I am glad Elias went to jail but it wasn't for nearly long enough. He should serve for as many years as Scott has to live with his disabilities. I was touched by his story and wonder how he is doing. I pray that he is able to find some peace and happiness in his life. What happened to him matters and the telling of his story was important for us to hear. It should never have happened but since it did it's important that we heard about it.As for Robert Dugoni, I've read all of his other books. He is one of my favourite authors. Although this book is very different than his others, I am glad I read it. It brought me to tears in many places. I couldn't put it down. He made everyone so real to me. I appreciated that he put the notes in about where they are now. I don't think I will ever forget Scott and what happened to him. I wonder how he is doing now. I believe that is an indication of a well written book. When the people stay with you long after you put the book down. Thank you for bringing something so important to our attention and doing it so well.
This is a well written, detailed, disturbing true story of the outrageously unsafe and irresponsible "workplace" where undocumented toxic substances were stored, dumped, and employees forced to work with and in them in confined spaces with NO protective equipment - and how the responsible owner almost got away with it. The authors expose how a savvy defendant and his defense team falsified records, manipulated law enforcement, intimidated witnesses, and worked the legal system to their advantage to a ridiculous degree, revealing how easy it was for the scales of justice to be tipped. And, the system itself is flawed - the initially imposed financial penalty requiring retribution to the employee permanently brain damaged and disabled was void because Congress has never authorized this kind of penalty in an environmental crime case. Leaves the reader sympathizing with the frustrations described by the investigators and prosecutors about how hard it is to succeed in these cases, and feeling especially sorry for the victim and his family.
